A Game Development Blog by Nickolas Marentes for the Tandy Color Computer 3.

This blog will primarily focus on the creative and technical design aspects I employ to create this game.
Due to time constraints, I will not be delving into the actual coding details.

Chapter 13 - All Levels Complete!

The light is approaching at the end of the tunnel and I decided to forgo my planned Development Blog last month so as to finish the coding for the remaining levels. All levels are now functioning and I have only a handful of things left to do before I begin the game testing cycle.

I have been doing a lot of testing, tweaking, changing and even redesigning of levels as I progressed but soon I will be able to test the game as a whole.

Below are current screen shots of all the levels along with their working title. Static images don't do the game justice but I have animated the screens to give the game a feeling of a working mechanical environment. The background soundscape of operating machinery along with the spinning cogs in the background reinforce this.

The Level Gallery

The Foyer is the central main room that leads to all the other rooms via two lifts. These allow access to the 12 rooms and a 13th room (not shown here) on the top floor which is locked until you clear the security systems in each of the other rooms.

This 13th door leads to where a massive nuclear bomb is counting down to detonation which will destroy the entire city and kill the millions of people who live there.

You may enter and exit each of the rooms freely, collecting EMF charges, disabling the security system and temporarily disabling the security robots.

All of the status displays at the bottom of the screen now operate displaying EMF Charges, Lives, Countdown Timer and Security Status.

  Platform or Adventure?

I'm wondering what genre to call this game.

It's clearly a platformer but it's not a fast paced type arcade game like Chet Simpson's excellent Digger 3.

It's not really an adventure in the usual sence either.

There is actually NO SCORING! It's just one big mission with the goal of disabling a bomb and saving the city.

So how about I call it a Platform Adventure?

Things to do

  • Robots to kill you.
  • Throwing of the EMF Charges to disable the robots temporarily.
  • A special flying security robot that will intermittently appear to give you a hard time.
  • The WIN screen. (The ARMAGEDDON screen is done)
